At the moment, whether those characters work or not depends on your host's settings; version 2 will change this so they will work on all hosts.

The navbar colour can be changed through modifying the CSS (styles/themes/*Theme*/css/custom.css), this guide tells you the CSS you need to add.

You can change the orange header background by changing line 17 of styles/templates/*Template*/index.tpl to match one of Bootstrap's panel styles (although the colours will vary depending on your theme).
